about

These two tunes come from the small town of Rio de Onor in Portugal. They were captured on tape in the 1960s by Ernesto Veiga de Oliveira, a Portuguese ethnologist travelling across the country, indexed EVO 283 and EVO 278 respectively.

The piper he recorded, Xuan Prieto Ximeno, had a very distinctive playing style that inspired a whole generation of pipers. His style is characteristic of the Sanabria region. Along with being a master piper, he was also known to smuggle two to three kilos of coffee in his bagpipes.

These tunes are part of the APEDGF traditional Portuguese bagpipe repertoire. The chanter used is a modern adaptation of that style of north-eastern Portuguese bagpipe, built by master makers Mário and Vítor from Sons da Música in Portugal.
